Do Indonesian buyers need a visa for the Canton Fair?
What the transit route's onward-ticket condition actually means in practice, and an honest gap in what we could confirm about the regular visa checklist.
Indonesian passport holders need a business (M) visa for most trips to attend the Canton Fair — Indonesia isn’t on China’s visa-free list. There’s a genuine exception worth knowing about, though: Indonesia is one of the few markets this guide covers where China’s 240-hour visa-free transit applies, which can let the right kind of itinerary skip the visa question entirely.
The 240-hour transit option
If your trip to the Canton Fair is one leg of a longer journey — say, a stop in Guangzhou on the way to or from another country — you may be able to enter without a visa at all under China’s 240-hour visa-free transit scheme. Guangzhou’s Baiyun airport is one of the ports covered by it. The condition that matters most: your onward ticket has to be to a genuine third country or region, not back to Indonesia. A straightforward Indonesia-to-Guangzhou-and-back trip doesn’t qualify.
This route won’t suit everyone — it depends entirely on your actual itinerary — but if you were already planning a multi-stop business trip, it’s worth checking before you default to a full visa application.
Whether the invitation letter helps with the regular visa route
For most of the markets in this guide, we could check the visa centre’s own document checklist directly and say plainly whether the Canton Fair’s invitation letter counts as sufficient on its own. For Indonesia, the checklist we found was published in a format we couldn’t read, so this is a genuine gap rather than a confirmed answer either way. Request the invitation letter regardless — it’s free, and there’s no reason not to have it — but don’t assume it substitutes for whatever documents your visa centre’s own checklist actually asks for. Confirm the current requirements with the centre directly before you rely on it.
