Zhanxi is a strip of dedicated shoe-trading buildings along and around Zhanxi Road, with several thousand vendors spread across a number of named trading centres. Estimates of the exact scale vary between sources — this guide uses the more conservative figure rather than the larger cluster-wide estimate, since the two don’t clearly measure the same thing.

Getting there: the area is served by metro to Guangzhou’s main railway station, a ride of some length from the fair complex with one change of line.

What actually differs from buying at the fair

At Zhanxi, you buy finished pairs by the box — typically a handful to a dozen pairs of one style in a size run — take them with you, and negotiate price on the spot. The Canton Fair’s footwear section works on manufacturer contracts instead: your own last, your own branding, a minimum order set across a full size range, and production time before delivery — a different product for a different kind of order.
